This behaviour has just caused me again to lose something I was typing. I cannot see any reason why the site should behave in this way, and when it causes you to lose something you were typing, it is really infuriating.

Agreed, it's incredibly annoying. I used to do some quick translations while waiting for a game, but I've stopped doing that because of this behaviour.

There must be a less intrusive way of signalling that a game is ready.

AAARGH this is INFURIATING. Yet again I have lost something I was typing, in this case another bug report which I was carefully compiling. What is the point in this destructive tab-hijacking?

And again, lost a forum post that I was typing. This is infuriating and completely pointless. If I open a new tab, I do not expect other tabs to interfere with it. I find that seriously intrusive and objectionable. Why is the site doing this?

I find this extremely annoying as well. I have multiple tabs open for the site, including tournament pages, chats, etc. When I'm waiting for an Arena game, I'm usually looking at another tab. When the Arena game finds an opponent, ALL my tabs switch to the arena game. This is sometimes 20+ switch. Then I have to go through each one and click on the back tab. Super annoying.

Another forum post lost. Very nearly a full year since I posted this bug report. No response or explanation of any kind from the developers for this intrusive and disruptive site behaviour really rankles, I must say.

Once again, a forum post lost due to this obnoxious tab-hijacking behaviour. Still no explanation or justification of it. If someone from BGA had taken the time to outline any kind of rationale for this it would have been nice.

And another forum post lost. No explanation for this obnoxious, destructive behaviour; no hint that anybody has even so much as looked at this report. It seems to me it was pointless making it.

There are only 20 thumb ups, apparently NOT many enough for the dev to see it.

On the other side of this issue are the people who wait for a real-time Arena game to start, then get stalled on the first move because one of the players is in another tab writing a forum post and not paying attention. Failed real-time games are going to increase if this suggestion is implemented.
A medium suggestion: maybe there should be a flashing banner in the other windows when a real-time game starts?

I just lost a game of CuBirds boardgamearena.com/table?table=353947851 because when I joined the table, BGA decided to hijack 20+ tabs simultaneously to load the game. This completely froze my browser, because each of those tabs now had to produce the game sounds and graphics. I tried to click the back button on all those tabs to return them to the previous pages, so that I'd only have one tab with the active game. But they all froze and I lost on time, because it took more than 3 minutes to resolve.

This tab hijacking is REALLY annoying. I keep tabs open: tournaments I'm following, games I want to replay, some stats pages, etc. So many times, I find many of them hijacked when a new game starts. This is unacceptable. Please FIX this.

If you have more than one tab waiting for the game to start, you must stay in the tab that you really want to play in.
That way, you won't lose what you've written in your other tab, and you'll be able to continue writing without loss when the game starts.

The underlying attitude among BGA admin seems to be "we know better than our users about how they should go about searching for games and playing games, or even how they should use their own browsers".

Just look at the horrible new game listing, or the needless restrictions on no-time-limit turn-based games that can no longer be played as ranked games, or how the results of Arena games puts an overlay over the entire page that often won't go away, even if one clicks the dismissal button, thus requiring a full page refresh to make go away ( boardgamearena.com/bug?id=14407 ).

For this to work, the apps should know that there are several tabs open. I don't think it is feasible. Or there should be several tabs open by BGA itself ?

stoiclewischesterton - it is feasible to detect, that the player is actively using a tab with BGA website in it. It would be easy to just intrude that tab and the tab related to the game starting and not all.

Another solution would be a special adress, where the game starting intrusion will end up (like the special page boardgamearena.com/play which is automatically leading you to the next turn based table )

It could open a popin in the tab you are on, with a button to go to the game in a new tab.

It is five years since I filed this report. The developers apparently still believe that they know better than I do what page I want to be viewing, and feel fully entitled to destroy whatever I was doing to make me view what they want me to view. Clearly, they are never going to bother to explain why they feel this way, nor change this utterly obnoxious tab-hijacking.

Once again I have lost a forum post I was writing because of this outrageous behaviour. You do not know better than me what page I want to be looking at. Stop destroying whatever else I am doing on your site when a game starts.
