"In case of a tie, the tied player with the most leftover food wins. If still tied, the tied player with the single largest enclosed area of the matching symbols wins. If still tied, compare the second largest enclosed area of the matching symbols and so on. If still tied, the players share the victory."

Each leftover time counts as 5 towards the tiebreaker, but it doesn't add 5 to the food counter, so you can see the remaining time and food separately at the end of the game. Lefalaf had 4 time leftover, so 20 tiebreaker score, while you had 9 food and no time, so 9 tiebreaker score.
I also had to recently rework tiebreaker so it doesn't break with a lot of leftover food, so the first position in the tiebreaker is the number of player with tiebreaker score lower than yours.
It all boils down to BGA only allowing one tiebreaker (which must be integer too), requiring all sorts of workarounds and hacks, and I don't know how to make it more intuitive.

Part of what caused the confusion last night was I missed the step where unused time/steps on the board due to running out of food converts to food at a rate of 5 food per step. I only looked up the tiebreak rule for us, but missed this end of game "cleanup".
In our game, I still had 0 food at the end and my ship was not at the end.
A suggestion to reduce confusion would be to move the ship to the end and give the 5 food per space to the player, prior to the tiebreak, as this is how the procedure is done in the rulebook. Convert to food first, moving all ships to the end, and only then winner is determined. That way it would be clear what the food comparison is and aligns with the rulebook.
Technically, the game doesn't end until all boats are at the end of the track: "The game ends when all players’ boats reach the last space of the river track.
If a player cannot buy a stone block from the offer (they do not have enough food and/or time, or their
pyramid is finished) they must immediately move their boat to the last space of the river track. They gain
5 food for each space moved this way. "
Thanks.
